Community Groups — The Four Gospels

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. – John 1:1

The life of Jesus Christ started before time began, and the story isn't finished yet! This semester we are reading a survey study of the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Here a few thoughts for you as you begin reading:

  • Upon completion of this study you'll have an overview of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ that will increase your understanding of the gospels. Not knowing the "big picture" can lead to focusing on technicalities or taking scriptures out of context, both of which can lead to wrong doctrine.
  • You will also gain a better understanding of the people and places in the gospels. Knowing the details of the setting and the people Jesus is talking to will increase your ability to properly interpret what Jesus is saying.
  • Studying the scripture is a scholarly endeavor. We are all instructed to study to show ourselves approved unto God (I Timothy 2:15). You must realize that gaining greater understanding of the scriptures will stimulate your faith, not hinder it.
  • Knowledge produces boldness. The things you will learn in this study must be balanced with development in your character, because knowledge by itself leads to pride (1 Corinthians 8:2)
  • Knowledge must also be communicated in love. (Ephesians 4:15) When knowledge is used correctly it will increase your boldness and it will be used by God to open doors for you to share the gospel message.

Now on with the story...

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:14
